I really should be a bigger fan of Babe Ruth. After all, he and I have a lot in common: we both grew up in Maryland, attended Catholic school, and love baseball. But then, there’s that whole Yankees thing. Besides, there are so many legends and stories about Ruth, it’s really hard to take it all in. The Babe truly was – and still is – larger than life.
However, when I stumbled upon this picture of Ruth supporting Christmas Seals in 1921, I needed to know more. What I was found out was that, apparently, Ruth’s philanthropy is actually quite legendary. In fact, in 2010 he was inducted into World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame, where he was honored among the likes of Roberto Clemente and Jackie Robinson. Not bad for a Yankee.
