Jackie Robinson Day

Major League Baseball celebrates Jackie Robinson day today, the 66th anniversary of his Major League debut. Several events are planned by Major League teams to honor the life and work of Robinson.

According to the 2012 Racial & Gender Report Card for MLB, the percentage of African American players decreased from 19 percent in 1995 to 8.8 percent in 2012. Recently, Major League Baseball expressed concern over the recent trend of fewer blacks and African Americans on major league teams, and announced it was establishing (another) task force to address the issue.  Over the next few weeks, the Baseball Sociologist will take a look at some of the past efforts and current comments on the issue.  Until then, what do you think?

What would Jackie do?
