Red Sox or Cardinals?

2006 World Series TrophyThe 2013 World Series begins tonight between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox.  This annual championship series has been played almost every year since 1903 (the only years we didn’t have a World Series were 1904 and 1994).

The postseason can be a difficult time for those of us whose teams are not participating.  As baseball fans, we want to participate; we want to have someone to root for. After all, some of the reasons sports are so popular are that they create a feeling of belonging, give people something to hope for and root for, and bring pride to a city.

The choice of whom to vote for, however, can be a difficult one.  Of course, there’s no lack of advice about who to follow – much of it biased.  However, Sociologists like to base their decisions and conclusions on real data.  So, like last year, in the spirit of Baseball Sociology, I’ve gathered a few stats for you to analyze when making your post season decisions – maybe the table below will help you choose which team to follow during this year’s series.

Whoever you root for, Happy World Series!
