Best of the Week: 7/9-15/2017

I think Aaron Judge hitting the roof of Marlins Park counts for one of the best baseball stories of the week. As Sports Illustrated reported:

Aaron Judge’s Homer Off the Roof Denied NASA calculations.

Happy Sunday!

What’s Going On In Venezuela?

Venezuela was back in the U.S. public consciousness recently, if only for a brief moment. Earlier in the week, Miguel Cabrera posted several videos on social media speaking out against the violence and unrest in Venezuela. On Monday he stated, “I am tired of hearing that they are going to kidnap my mother, and I don’t know whether it is a policeman or a bad guy, I don’t know who they are. All I know is if I don’t pay, those people disappear.”

Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio declined to participate in the All Star festivities celebrating Latino players in MLB, noting: “Unfortunately, conditions in my country prevent me from traveling.”

“No puedo celebrar mientras los jóvenes de mi país mueren luchando por ideales de libertad [I can’t celebrate when young people of my country are dying for their freedom].” – Luis Aparicio

So what’s going on in Venezuela, and why do we know so little about it? For these Venezuelan players and those who support them, it’s a matter of freedom. For those of us who pay little attention to Venezuela, we need to be educated on the issues. Next week, I’ll post more of the background of the political and economic issues in Venezuela, as well as the role MLB has played in that country.

Missing Baseball?

Seems like there are no MLB games scheduled for tonight. It’s been two days since the All-Star game, and the Triple A and Eastern League all-star games were yesterday. So what are we supposed to do tonight?

There are probably chores to do, books to read, or other things that we could be doing. But if you need a baseball fix, why not listen to The Baseball Project? (One of the most awesomest bands ever!) Since the All-Star Game was in Miami, and since Pitbull sang before the home run derby, I figured the Baseball Project’s song about Cuban baseball defectors was appropriate.

Enjoy!

Two More All-Star Games

If you think the All-Star Break is all but over, you’re wrong. Tonight the Triple A All-Star game will be played between the International League and Pacific League all-stars. The Eastern League All-Star game will also be played tonight. Both games will be on MiLB.TV.

Yesterday, before the first pitch of the MLB All-Star Game was even thrown, one of my very own Bowie Baysox, Aderlin Rodriguez, had won the Eastern League Home Run Derby. The Triple A home run derby took place on Monday, with the title being captured by Bryce Brentz of the Pawtucket Red Sox. Brentz hit 18 home runs and Rodriguez hit 14 to win their respective titles.

Congrats MiLB All-Stars!
