2019 Heritage Nights at the Ballpark, Part 1

Image result for internationalAs a Baseball Sociologist, some of my favorite ballpark promotions are heritage nights. Even if you aren’t from a particular community, you can still celebrate with your neighbors, learn something about their heritage, watch some cool dances or presentations, and eat food you don’t normally get to taste.

This year, the Oakland A’s and the San Francisco Giants are doing the most heritage nights – 14 each.  The Padres and Marlins are right behind them with 11 and 10, respectively. In addition, the Marlins introduced “Comunidad 305” this year. They have a dedicated area in the ballpark where they “celebrate culture every game.” According to their website: “No matter where you are from, you are part of what makes Miami great. We are fusing our pride for our Heritage, our city, our diversity and our team to represent every night. Musical instruments, flags and more will be welcomed and encouraged.”

However, 19 teams – that’s NINETEEN teams – have two or fewer heritage days scheduled. At least from my count. Granted, sometimes it’s hard to find where they have the list on their websites. But then again, if it’s not advertised that well, does it really count?

Below are the first groupings I’m posting: Jewish Heritage Nights, Irish/Italian/German/ Polish Heritage Nights, and Latin American Heritage Nights. I decided to group Irish, Italian, German, and Polish heritage nights together because they are European heritage groups that are frequently celebrated at the ballpark. I chose these three groupings simply because they have celebration nights this coming up this weekend. Finally, I’ve included past dates just so you can see if you’re team or group were celebrated and when.

Keep in mind that several of these events include a giveaway item with a special ticket – so be sure to check the team websites for more information. Next week I’ll post additional heritage nights, so stay tuned!

Copa de la Diversión y Latino Heritage Nights

dscn6884-e1531358499195.jpgThis season, 33 minor league teams have been competing in the Copa de la Diversión – the Fun Cup. According to the MiLB website, this season-long promotion is “specifically designed to embrace the culture and values that resonate most with participating teams’ local U.S. Hispanic/Latino communities.” The campaign follows the 2017 marketing campaign, “It’s Fun to Be a Fan” (“Es Divertido Ser Un Fan”). It’s also an opportunity to sell cool Spanish-language merch and be silly in a whole other language.

DSCN6880There were 165 games this season designated as “Copa” games, so there is still plenty of time to catch one. I had the pleasure of attending the Cangrejos Fantasmas de Chesapeake’s (Ghost Crabs, aka Bowie Baysox) event on June 26. Players were announced in both English and Spanish, Latin music was played throughout the game, and the concession stand included tacos, nachos, yucca, frijoles, and plantanitos fritos.

Of course, this is in addition to the regularly scheduled Latino heritage nights that are found throughout both MLB and MiLB. Check out the list of remaining Latino heritage nights below – and definitely check out the Copa de la Diversión!

Island Luau Night at the Bowie Baysox

We may have missed Armenian Night at the Tigers, which happened July 7, but there are plenty of heritage and community nights left at ballparks around the country this summer. So, if you’re Greek, German, Polynesian, Nordic, Arab American, or a member, friend, or supporter of several other groups, you might want to mark your calendar for one of the nights below. In addition, in case you missed Pride Night at your local ballpark, there are two more scheduled for August: at the Cardinals (August 17) and the White Sox (August 31).

Later this week I’ll report on the remaining Latino nights, religious-themed nights, and, of course, bobblehead nights.

Baseball Heritage: Part 1 (the Big Four: German, Hispanic, Irish, and Italian)

Flyer for Italian Heritage Night with the San Francisco GiantsOne thing I love about minor league baseball is the teams’ creative ideas for promotions. Recently, Major League teams have followed suit by having similar promotions. The ones that caught my attention this year are those that I call “Heritage Nights.” This year, you can celebrate everything from Black Heritage to Slovenian Heritage at ballparks across the country.

Sociologists just love this kind of thing – especially the Baseball Sociologist! Someday I will analyze this more carefully, but for now I’ll just give you a rundown of the many heritages you can celebrate. For starters, the Omaha Storm Chasers held a generic-sounding “Heritage Night” on April 18. Its unclear which heritage(s?) they may have been celebrating, though it did include a pre-game parade featuring the St. Lucia Group (whoever they are) and a pre-game performance by a local Native American group. In addition, the Quad Cities River Bandits are holding “Global Cultural Night” on August 15, though they don’t explain what that entails. Maybe these celebrations are designed to celebrate everything.

Other teams are hosting celebrations that I’m not convinced are necessarily celebrating any sort of heritage. This include the many, many teams that are having Cinco de Mayo celebrations (though not all on May 5, or even in May), St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and Mardi Gras celebrations (such as “Halfway to Mardi Gras” night at the New Orleans Zephyrs on August 14 and “Mardi Gras Night” hosted by the Modesto Nuts on August 29).  Of course, if you don’t want to profess any sort of heritage other than “American,” you can go to “American Heritage Night” on July 2 at the Wilmington Blue Rocks. (Which, I’m guessing, is likely related to 4th of July celebrations at several other ballparks.)

Today, I’m giving you the dates for the top 4 groups – those that them most teams are celebrating: German Heritage (also includes Oktoberfest), Hispanic Heritage (or Latino or Latin American Heritage), Irish Heritage (not including St. Patrick’s Day celebrations), and Italian Heritage.

Enjoy celebrating everyone’s heritage!
